Yes, that’s right, today Elon Musk showed a video of a space rocket landing. The entire thing. No waste. Nothing dropping to Earth. Nothing crashing into the ocean. The first stage propulsion unit takes the ship into space, turns around and comes right back. And lands.
The soft-spoken, thoughtful, founder of SpaceX, co-founder of Tesla Motors and chairman of SolarCity explains the video he just showed. It was sent to him by his editor just half an hour before his interview at SXSW. It hadn’t been seen by anyone else, not even his own people.
Elon Musk dreams big, and then figures out how to make it work. His ambition is to be able to colonize other planets. That’s a big dream. What’s stopping us? The cost. The cost of the fuel is only 0.3% the cost of the hardware itself. So, it’s critical to have reusable spacecraft. He quips, if every week on Star Track they’d roll out a new USS Enterprise, we’d have all been pretty surprised. His video today showed that will be possible sometime in the near future.
Would he like to be the one to land on Mars? Yes, he would once his company, Space X, is safe and on track to reach his goal. My favorite quote so far at SXSW, “I would like to die on Mars, just not on impact”.
